Riverlink.PRN

The Riverlink.PRN (postgraduate research network) is a joint initiative between Riverlink and La Trobe University.

The objective is to encourage, and seek funding, for postgraduate students to conduct research in the Sunraysia-Riverland region.

Students will enjoy the opportunity to work on challenging and industry relevant research projects, while gaining valuable experience in the horticultural industries.

Australian horticultural industries are rapidly expanding as new markets develop. Future career opportunities in horticultural research are opening.

Sustainable salt exclusion by salt tolerant rootstocks

The salinity of irrigation water is of great concern to the wine industry, with salinity having the potential to seriously compromise yields and wine quality. This study examined the ability of grapevine rootstocks to exclude chloride when grown under saline conditions in the vineyard. The mechanism of chloride exclusion in the chloride 'excluding' rootstock 140 Ruggeri and the chloride 'accumulating' rootstock K51-40 was also studied. The chloride exclusion of some rootstocks diminished with long term exposure to salinity. Concentrations of chloride accumulated in 140 Ruggeri were similar or even higher than those in K51-40 but entry of chloride into the xylem of 140 Ruggeri was restricted, implicating a role of cellular ion transport processes within the stele.
